RSA eNews - CommuniquePlus February 2021

CommuniquéPlus

Message from the President

As I put together some words for this  "Message from the President" I am saddened to learn of further COVID-19 lockdowns in Victoria and Auckland.   On behalf of the RSA Board, I would like to wish all CommuniquePlus readers and their loved ones living in these areas a short and safe lockdown period.   Our best wishes are with you all.

As supplies of the vaccines are soon to land on our shores, it is perhaps timely that this issue of CommuniquePlus contains an invitation from the ANZSN to all CommuniquePlus readers to join the ANZSN Seventh COVID-19 Forum.   This forum will be focused on providing information to patients with kidney disease specifically on COVID-19 vaccination.

I would also like to draw your attention to a JOINT COVID-19 Vaccination Position Statement for Australian Patients with Kidney Disease or Kidney Transplants.  This statement was prepared by the Australian and New Zealand Society of Nephrology (ANZSN), the Renal Society of Australasia (RSA) and Kidney Health Australia (KHA).   Read more here.

On a more exciting note - the countdown has begun - 120 days until this year’s RSA Annual Conference!  I encourage all CommuniquePlus readers to consider supporting this year's event by submitting an oral or poster presentation.  More information regarding the call for abstracts is available here.

I would like to remind all RSA members that they can apply for funding to attend the RSA  Annual Conference, where the member:

  • has been a financial member for at least 2 concurrent years,
  • meets the specified selection criteria; and
  • commits to fulfilling the requirements

More information regarding RSA 2021 Annual Conference funding is available here.

So, until our next issue of CommuniquePlus - Stay safe, stay healthy…

Jon Hosking
President

Latest Update from KHA

Kidney Health Week is coming – 15 – 21 March

In Kidney Health Week 2021, we pay special tribute to Shane, our hero from our #nofilter campaign which we launched in September last year. Shane shared his story of life on dialysis, the impact it had on him and his wife and daughters. Sadly, Shane passed away in December, but his wife Jodie and daughters wish to carry on our important message regarding early detection, so people can tackle this insidious disease earlier.

We will also be asking our community to help spread the word on early detection far and wide so that more people can check their risk factors for kidney disease, particularly diabetes and hypertension, and ask their GP for a Kidney Health Check.

During Kidney Health Week, we will be holding some digital events, so check our webpage as the week draws nearer to find out what’s on.

We also be sending out a campaign pack in early March to all renal units and other stakeholders containing campaign specific collateral plus other Kidney Health Week information on kidney disease and the links with diabetes and hypertension.

If you would like to request a pack, please email careteam@kidney.org.au.

We look forward to your support to help the 1.5 million Australians unaware they are living with the early signs of kidney disease to get diagnosed earlier and live their best possible life.

Please take a moment....   CommuniquePlus readers are asked to take a moment to review the message below from one of our sponsors.  The RSA could not provide the educational opportunities we do without the support of our sponsors.  This is our opportunity to support them.  Thank you!
