RSA eNews - CommuniquePlus June 2021

CommuniquéPlus

Message from the President

As most of you would now be aware, the 2021 RSA  Annual Conference planned for Melbourne this month has now, because of the situation on the ground in Melbourne and Victoria, been switched from a hybrid to a fully virtual event. While always a possibility in these uncertain times, the Conference Organising Committee, RSA Board and our RSA Office partners, Association Professionals had from the outset built in contingency planning for just this scenario – so the good news is that the conference will go ahead but will be entirely virtual. One of the benefits of the virtual conference format is that unlike any previous conference, delegates will have access to all presentations after the event - so they can experience Melbourne 2021 in a way never previously experienced before!

If you would like to attend you can still register online here. Even if you are unable to make the conference this time round, please do think about registering for the RSA 2021 Annual General Meeting, which will be a virtual meeting held online at 10am AEST, Friday, 18 June.

The RSA 2020/21 Annual Report is now available on the RSA website.  I would encourage all members to take a moment to have a look: the annual report gives a clear picture of what the RSA offers and has achieved in the last year!  Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to the report.

Despite the present COVID-19 related setback for our face to face annual conference, planning is now underway for RSA Branch Symposia - and other workshops, such as the ever-popular Vascular Access and Anaemia Management. Check out all the educational opportunities available to our members in the second half or 2021 on the RSA website.

Finally, it is with sadness that we are farewelling our Executive Officer, Wendy Weston at the end of June. Wendy has made a huge contribution to the RSA in the last two and a half years – in particular, forging a stronger relationship with our sponsors. On behalf of the RSA Board and all our members I would like to say a very big thank you to Wendy for her dedication and commitment to the EO role and wish her all the best in her new endeavours.

Jon Hosking
President

2021 RSA Annual Conference Goes Virtual!

As you would expect the RSA has been closely monitoring the COVID situation in Victoria: With more than 300 Melbourne exposure sites, new cases being reported in Victoria and some states closing their borders it is becoming increasingly obvious that the RSA 2021 Annual Conference cannot continue as a hybrid event.

Therefore, the RSA 2021 Organising Committee and RSA Board in consultation with the Melbourne
Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) have made the difficult decision to convert this conference to a totally virtual online conference experience.

Just to reiterate, the RSA 2021 Annual Conference will not be cancelled or postponed. It will be a virtual event. The good news is you can still register for this fully virtual online conference experience. The advantage of the virtual conference is that you can watch all presentations live, or in your own time after the event, allowing you to watch every single presentation at a time that suits you. Workshops will also be broadcast online.

Speakers are being contacted to reaffirm their commitment to a virtual event and therefore maintaining the quality and integrity of the existing program. An updated program will be released soon.

Not registered, not a problem, you can register here.

RSA Nephrology Nurse Practitioner (NNP) Special Interest Group (SIG)

The RSA Nephrology Nurse Practitioner (NNP) SIG was formed in early 2020, but had an unexpected hiatus during COVID and we have been meeting third monthly since late 2020.  The purpose of this group was to provide education, support, and networking opportunities, and to promote issues that are specific to NNP roles such as mentoring and collaboration with research.

Our meetings have included some interesting speakers from NPs, including Cassie Stone NNP in CKD, Bettina Douglas NNP updating us on the NMBA NP standards and Dan Fowler NP Nurse Navigator talking about his role in rheumatic heart disease.

There is currently a lot going on behind the scenes with two groups working on 1) an application for NNP S100 prescribing, and 2) a NNP and advanced practice nurses education workshop.

The PBS application for NP prescribing of Erythropoietin Stimulating Agents (ESAs) is taking shape and we are hoping to distribute the draft document to the larger group, for comment and input, at our next meeting.

Planning for the NP/Advance Practice workshop is well underway with an impressive line-up of speakers agreeing to participate.  We hope to finalise the location and venue soon, but this will be event not to miss!

We plan to continue with third monthly meetings which will include 20-30 minutes of education followed by the agenda directed meeting.

RSA members who are also Nephrology Nurse Practitioners would be most welcome to join this important RSA SIG.  To join, simply email your EOI to execofficer@renalsociety.org.

AstraZeneca would like to extend an invitation to all CommuniquePlus readers to attend the ERA-EDTA  2021 Congress Highlights webinar which will provide a digital platform for International Scientific Exchange in Nephrology care.

Designed and led by a prominent faculty of international experts and chaired by Professor Carol Pollock, these 2 live webinars open firstly by bringing home the key highlights and hot topics of ERA-EDTA 2021 Congress regarding the optimal management of people with Kidney Disease. This is underpinned by the key theme of the congress “HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT, HEALTHY KIDNEYS” where the concept of green nephrology has never been more possible nor indeed more essential.
