You may only register for one workshop and may not swap into any other workshops during that day. New for 2021, the recordings for the workshops (except for the Vascular Access workshop) will be available on-demand to all registration types until 16 August 2021. This means, when you return home after the conference you can watch any workshop you have missed or want to catch up on. Workshop 1: Green Nephrology

Saturday 19 June, 11.30am - 4.00pm (lunch break 1.30pm - 2.00pm)

Climate change is the biggest global health threat of the 21st century. It is expected to impact patterns and distribution of kidney disease as well as our ability to provide kidney care to our patients. Simultaneously, kidney care delivery (particularly dialysis) has high environmental impact and contributes to the problem of climate change.
This interactive Green Nephrology workshop is designed to explore the impact of environmental change, particularly climate change, on kidney care delivery and vice versa.

Topics for discussion include:

  • Extreme weather events – what risks do they pose to dialysis delivery? What can we learn from the experience of dialysis units and patients that have been affected by extreme weather events already? What measures do we need to put in place within our own dialysis services?

  • The environmental impact of kidney care delivery  (particularly dialysis)

  • What steps can we take in our own units to improve this?

Workshop 2: A practical guide for conducting research

Saturday 19 June, 11.30am - 4.00pm (lunch break 1.30pm - 2.00pm)

The thought of conducting a QI or research project can be daunting. This 4-hour interactive workshop is designed for novice researchers who may have been thinking of conducting a QI or research project in their workplace. The workshop will go over the key components of planning a successful research project and provide an opportunity for participants to draw on the experience of the facilitators. The workshop allows time to discuss and develop research ideas with facilitators and others attending the workshop.

Topics will include:

  • Developing a research question

  • How to conduct a literature review

  • Selecting a method (Qualitative, Quantitative or Mixed)

  • Navigating an ethics application

  • Funding your project

  • Tips to help you publish your research

Workshop 3: Supportive Care: Maintain the Momentum

Saturday 19 June, 11.30am - 4.00pm (lunch break 1.30pm - 2.00pm)

Supportive Care, or conservative care as it is sometimes referred to, is becoming an embedded part of renal care throughout Australia and the world. There are many different models of care being provided, a variety of patient assessment tools and a wide range of people providing the care. This workshop will look at some of the new research in supportive care featuring both local and international speakers.  After lunch we have the opportunity to develop some skills in pain management from our palliative care and nephrology colleagues and also gain some understanding of the Voluntary Assisted Dying legislation in Victoria. An expert panel from nephrology,  palliative care and allied health will  participating in a discussion of some of the complex ethical and logistical issues around the use of VAD and supportive care.

Workshop 4: Prescribing Goal-directed Peritoneal Dialysis (PD)

Saturday 19 June, 11.30am - 4.00pm (lunch break 1.30pm - 2.00pm)

This interactive workshop will discuss in great detail the 2020 International Society of Peritoneal Dialysis (ISPD) practice recommendations on prescribing high quality goal-directed PD.  There will be five sessions aimed at unpacking the recommendations, with plenty of opportunities for the audience to ask questions and brainstorm real-life case studies. The discussions will be around shared decision-making between the patient doing PD and his/her care team, preservation of residual kidney function and parameters to consider for quality prescriptions. There will be thought-provoking examples of novel prescriptions to reduce treatment burden, including incremental PD.  The case studies will demonstrate and encourage creativity in PD prescribing. It is hoped that at the end of the workshop, participants will take home some useful tips on the many ways to deliver high quality PD while considering patients’ preferences and life goals.

Workshop 5: Vascular Access “Connection for life”

Saturday 19 June, 11.30am - 5.00pm (lunch break 1.30pm - 2.00pm)

  • Introduce and refresh point of care use of Ultrasound (US) of vascular access
  • Exposure to ultrasound equipment available to use in haemodialysis settings
  • Partnering with industry to provide practical and interactive skills in the use of real time ultrasound and scanning techniques
  • Provide practical “hands on” experience of vascular access assessment; identify complications, cannulation simulation and problem solving skills
  • Provide the opportunity for participants from novice to advanced practitioners to get together and share their experience of vascular access and haemodialysis
  • Tips for dialysis access care and management

This workshop will be facilitated by experienced vascular access coordinators proficient in Assessments and Ultrasound use and is supported by Medtronic. Participant numbers are capped at 30 so register early.
