CommuniquéPlus

Message from the President

The countdown begins - 93 days until the 2021 RSA Annual Conference!

In a first for the RSA, this year’s Annual Conference is being offered as a Hybrid event.  This means that you can attend in person or if you are unable to travel to Melbourne, register as a virtual delegate.   There are NO plans to cancel the 2021 RSA Annual Conference OR move away from a Hybrid event.

More information regarding this year’s conference appropriately themed “Renal care beyond a crisis: Possibilities and future directions” is available here.

Another exciting item on the RSA calendar are the RSA Awards.   These important awards were designed to shine a light on RSA members and recognise their tireless contribution to advancing the care of people with kidney disease.

If you know someone who deserves to have the light shone upon them, please nominate them for one of the following categories:  RSA Award, Branch Award, Clinical Excellence Award, Education Excellence Award or the Practice Advancement Award.

Congratulations to Jeff McMullen and the WA Branch Committee who recently held the first face-to-face educational dinner event for 2021!   Our thanks to AstraZeneca for supporting this important event.

Speaking of RSA Branches, I would like to personally invite all RSA members not volunteering at a branch level, to consider nominating themselves to become a Branch Committee member.   It can be an enormously rewarding and fun experience.   Find out more here.

I would like to conclude this month’s message by encouraging readers to register for this year’s RSA Annual Conference and either join us in Melbourne or virtually for what is going to be an extraordinarily exciting conference.   I for one cannot wait!

Until next time…

Jon Hosking
President

Kidney Health Month - NZ Style!

Kidney Health New Zealand has kicked off Kidney Health Month successfully with the MP screening in Wellington on the steps of parliament and TV coverage for the Canterbury Cricket Club screening.

The Canterbury Cricket Club screening was part of the awareness program: “While I still can” – E-Scooter Challenge 2021.  The TV coverage is available here.

Kidney Health New Zealand would like to thank all companies/DHB’s and support groups that supported World Kidney Day this year. It is thanks to their input that this day was so very successful!

More activities are planned for this month

Experiences and stories are being published weekly with John Kearns story published last week.

COVID-19 is still high on the agenda - vaccinations started to role out recently. Kidney Health New Zealand will be loading patient information on their website shortly.  Please keep an eye on this website.

Kidney Health Week is here!

Kidney Health Week awareness has got off to a great start with members of the kidney community sharing both the heart-wrenching realities of kidney disease, and the selfless acts of love that can so define this disease.

Kidney Health Australia launched its #nofilter tribute to Shane campaign yesterday which features Shane’s wife Jodie and their five daughters, who have courageously continuing Shane’s wish to raise more awareness around the need for early detection of kidney disease. You can view the campaign video here.

On a heart-warming note, Channel 7’s Sunrise program helped launch Kidney Health Week with a lovely story of Sarah and Josh. Sarah donated her kidney to brother Josh who had spent years seriously ill with kidney disease and other complications as a result of contracting lupus in his 20s. You can watch the segment and find out more about the tremendous bond they both share and how they are both passionate about helping to raise awareness of kidney disease.

Our community has been active on social media sharing our messages around early detection and we are encouraging as many people as possible to their own stories of life with #nofilter so others can understand the reality of life with kidney disease and be encouraged to seek a kidney health check.

Here’s how you can support Kidney Health Week:

  • Display posters and flyers in high traffic areas
  • During Kidney Health Week, take photos of your display to share on social media using the hashtags #lifewithnofilter #kidneydisease #earlydetection
  • Retweet and share our posts to promote our online information and events
  • Encourage your friends, family and colleagues to learn if they are at risk by taking the online Kidney Risk Test at kidney.org.au/kidneyrisktest

Plus, on World Kidney Day we released our evidence report Make the Link: Diabetes, Kidneys and Heart. This report details on the current evidence concerning the impact of CKD, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and their comorbidities.

Please take a moment....   CommuniquePlus readers are asked to take a moment to review the message below from one of our sponsors.  The RSA could not provide the educational opportunities we do without the support of our sponsors.  This is our opportunity to support them.  Thank you!
