Congratulations to Dr Leanne Brown, Nurse Practitioner specialising in Kidney Care, who was awarded today the HESTA Nurse Practitioner of the Year 2021.
Dr Leanne Brown is a Nurse Practitioner for Cape York Kidney Team. Leanne is recognised nationally as an expert in renal nursing and was awarded the Continuous Quality Improvement Award with the Cape York Kidney Care Program. Leanne completed her PhD in Chronic Kidney Disease and in 2019 received the Emerging Researcher Award by Palliative Care Queensland.
Leanne is always working to improve the health and wellbeing of clients with chronic kidney disease living in Cape York. She has improved how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island clients access kidney care; improved education and the data reflects improved outcomes for hypertension management and attendance.
Leanne’s nominator states “You just have to be in the clinics to see how busy and how well attended their clinics are to see the outcomes Leanne and her team is achieving. Leanne spends time with everyone at and educates them on how we can improve our care on the ground in the communities. The program has only been running a short while, but already outcomes are improving, and Leanne has a big part to play in that. It doesn’t matter how busy she is, she always has time to stop and answer questions, teach others and listen.”
Thank you to HESTA for your support of this incredible award this year and a BIG congratulations to Dr Leanne Brown. We are super proud of you!
Learnings from a COVID Positive Dialysis Unit - Staff & Patient Experiences
COVID continues to provide a daily challenge in Australia and New Zealand. This was clearly reflected in the most recent RSA webinar that our colleagues at Liverpool hospital in NSW kindly recorded, whilst in the midst of managing renal and dialysis units with multiple COVID positive patients. The content of this webinar was quickly identified as being important to support renal nurses across both countries in their planning and delivery to manage a similar situation. Dialysis units were not designed to host multiple patients with highly infectious diseases and the learning curves are enormous.
Please visit our special COVID RSA webpage to view the webinar recording and other resources in the COVID space. If you have any other useful nationally relevant resources that would enhance this page please contact our Executive Officer at execofficer@renalsociety.org
